ADMITTING OFFICER
(AO)
Overview
The admitting officer (AO)
rotation exposes the resident to a wide variety of medical problems found at the
transition from emergency care to inpatient hospitalization. Residents will be
expected to accurately and efficiently perform histories, physical examination,
and synthesis of data in order to initiate appropriate diagnostic and management
plans. Residents will utilize and be evaluated in communication and clinical
skills while interfacing with patients, family, ER staff and admitting attending
staff.
The AO will be responsible for
coordinating admissions to the Hospital. They will personally perform up
to 10 admissions in a 24 hour period and distribute other admissions to
appropriate housestaff.

Resources
Residents have 24 hour a day
access to the AMH library. Library staff can be asked to obtain any references
not physically located in the library through interlibrary loan. In addition
residents can access information through UpToDate which is available on every
computer within the hospital.
Evaluation Methods
Residents will be evaluated
through end of rotation ABIM 9 point lichert scale evaluation forms completed by
faculty. Residents will be required to submit H+Ps and present cases for
discussion and evaluation at morning report.
